When you have a pet in your house the first move that you must take is to ensure that you clear your kitchen counter almost every time you walk out of the kitchen. This ensures that your pet does not try to hop on to the counter in order to grab stuff placed on the countertop.
You cannot roam around with your pet everywhere and hence it is essential to take certain precautionary measures to avoid unwanted mishaps. While training your pet remember to never give a reward when they hop. This ensures that they get to know that it’s a bad habit and therefore avoid doing it in the future.
Dogs especially are enthused to find better things as reward other than food. Therefore, they tend to pick stuff placed on the countertop or right on the top. Thus, it is recommended to keep your countertops clear.
Train your pet to let go
Regardless of your hard efforts one of your family members is likely to (knowingly or unknowingly) leave a plate on the counter. If your pet gets a sight of this they are bound to rush to the spot to grab what’s placed on the counter.
Dogs, in general, possess the habit of snatching or grabbing stuff placed in and around them. But, if you notice them doing this make sure that you train them to leave these things alone. You can simply train them to react to the term “leave it”. This way, they understand the message and actually let go off things.
Teach them to keep their paws on the floor
You can train your dog to keep their paws on the floor which means that the chance of them hopping or jumping is reduced to a large extent. One way to develop this habit in them is to reward them when they keep all four paws on the ground.
The simplest and the best way is to reward your pet for their good behaviour. You can train them in such a manner that whenever you ask them to stay and they stand/sit in a position where all their paws are on the floor plan.
Note the problems
If you figure out that your dog is not reciprocating to your training or your actions then it is wise to seek additional help from experts. A professional can probably teach you the right trick to communicate with your dog and bridge the gap between the two of you.
Until you contact an expert you can try and avoid some of the common mistakes that you are currently making. For instance, if your dog does not have a habit of keeping their paws on the floor then remember to keep kitchen counters empty so that they don’t get tempted to jump/hop.
In your absence make sure that there is someone to look after them. Training a pet requires immense patience and consistent efforts. So continue your efforts and do not hesitate to seek professional help. Additionally, seek assistance before it is too late to kitchen train your pet dog.
Apart from all this, you can also train your dog to stay away from the kitchen if its an area of your home that you wish to remain dog-free.
